Foster families play a crucial role in helping our rescue grow. When you become a foster, you are providing a temporary home and care for an animal with unique and urgent needs, giving them love, stability, and a chance to thrive outside of the shelter environment. It's truly a special way to make a positive impact and help animals in need. Fostering allows our small animal shelter to expand its reach and save even more lives.

Interested in providing a temporary home for a pet in need? Fostering a pet is a meaningful commitment that presents an opportunity for growth and companionship. Our foster program serves animals that may not have a known history, and as a foster parent, you may witness transformations in their behavior and well-being during their time with you. We understand that the journey of fostering a pet can present challenges, but rest assured that our team will support you every step of the way. We provide all necessary supplies, veterinary care, and guidance, while you offer a stable and loving environment for the animal. If you're ready to embark on this rewarding journey, please fill out our Foster Application. If you have any questions you can email us HERE. We appreciate your interest in opening your heart and home to a foster animal.

  • To foster is to say yes to being changed.

Not just by the animal who walks into your home — but by the space they make inside your life, your rhythms, your heart. It’s not a one-way street. Fostering is not simply a gift you give; it is a mutual, transformative relationship.

When we open our doors to an animal in need, we’re not just offering safety or food or a temporary roof — we’re entering a sacred agreement. To bear witness. To provide comfort. To co-create a stretch of life together, no matter how short or long. To allow ourselves to be reshaped by the presence of another sentient being — one who brings their own story, needs, personality, and truth.

Some of these stories are heavy. Some are full of joy. All of them are real.

At Familiar Hearts, we believe that fostering is one of the most meaningful ways to be in relationship with animals. It's an act of trust — not just from the animal to the human, but from us to ourselves. That we will rise to meet what is asked of us. That we can learn the language of patience, presence, and deep listening. That we can hold space for love without the promise of forever, and still walk away more whole.

We often hear the phrase, “Who rescued who?” And while we tend to steer away from the word “rescue,” we understand the root of that question. Because fostering doesn’t just save lives — it reawakens something in us. It invites us into purpose. Into tenderness. Into clarity.

Fostering isn’t for everyone. But if your heart is even cracking open at the idea — we’d love to talk with you.

You’ll be supported every step of the way. Our team walks with you, providing supplies, guidance, and community. You don’t have to be an expert — just willing. Willing to show up. Willing to be changed. Willing to love a being who might only stay a little while, but will stay in your heart forever.

Fostering is hard. Fostering is holy. Fostering saves lives. Let’s save lives together!

And if you feel called — even just a little — we invite you to answer that call.
